Wilma Delores (Smiddy) Helton went to be with the Lord on November 24, 2016. She was born on January 12, 1932 to William David Smiddy and Addie Dean in Cawood, Kentucky where she spent her childhood. When she was 19 years old, she moved to Detroit where she met and fell in love with Leroy Helton and was married on September 12, 1953.
When she first came to Detroit she worked at Cunningham Drug Stores. She retired from Meijer’s in 2008 after twenty years of service. She was deeply involved in her church where she spent many years teaching Sunday School and as a Greeter in her later years.
She is preceded in death by her husband Leroy in 1998, brother James Lewis in 1938, and sister Opal Irene in 1929, along with her parents.
She is survived by her son Larry (Delaine) Helton of Grand Rapids, daughter Sharon Rose (Lewis Sr.) Williams of Eastpointe, grandchildren Lewis II, Eric, and Ashley, five great grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces and nephews, and friends. She is survived by her siblings David (Brenda) Smiddy of Kentucky, Virgil Smiddy of Arizona, Cassie Wolfehope of Pennsylvania, Shirley Howard of Florida, and Beulah (Rhonda) Smiddy of Florida.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at Tabernacle Christian Church, 14205 East Twelve Mile Road, Warren, Michigan 48088 from 10am until time of funeral service at 1pm, with the Bishop CJ Andre officiating.Luncheon to follow services in the church banquet hall.
