ApparentlyUncle Elmer never learned to swim. Or at least he hadn't prior to visiting us in Alabama in the 60's. There was a swimming pool at the trailer park we lived in and he went into the 4 ft deep area to walk around a bit. He saw me on the other side of the pool where I was standing unbeknownst to him on a shelf that surrounded a 10 ft deep area. The shelf was about 4 ft under the surface so from his perspective it looked like he could walk across to me. So he did. And immediately sank when he crosseed the deep end drop off. I never saw this, it was told to me right after. Fortunately a friend of mine was swimming in the area and saw him go down. My friend pushed him back a couple feet to the shallow end and all was well. I'm pretty sure he never forgot that. Looking back on it i see he was set up by the circumstances.
