Paul Mayers, a longtime resident of Detroit, passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2016 in Detroit. He was 93 years old.
Paul was born on July 8, 1923 in his childhood home in Barberton, Ohio to the late Anna Rowley and Paul Mayers. He eventually moved to Detroit where he met his cherished wife, Anges (nee Wardlaw); they were united in marriage in Hazel Park on July 13, 1946. Together, Paul and Agnes would spend over 54 years until Agnes’ death in 2001. Paul bravely served his country in the US Army during World War II, and spent 105 days in captivity as a prisoner of war. After the war, Paul held a number of jobs until he began work at Chrysler Tank (later General Dynamics), retiring as an industrial inspector after 30 years of work and dedication. He was also involved in the UAW and the General Dynamics Union.
When he wasn’t working, Paul enjoyed many activities with his family, including watching football with his children, working on boats and enjoying time spent on the family boat, tinkering around the house and working on cars. Paul had a natural gift of intelligence and always continued his learning through reading and watching PBS, even up until his passing.
Paul is loving husband of the late Agnes; the father of Patricia Mayers and Richard (Dawn) Mayers; beloved grandfather of Brian (Julie), David (Amanda), and Lee (Jennifer); and the loving great-grandfather of Blake and Gavin.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 11, 2016 at the Faulmann & Walsh Golden Rule Funeral Home, 32814 Utica Rd, Fraser, Mich. 48026 at 2pm. The family will receive friends from 1pm until the time of service. The Rev. Aaron Richert of St. John Lutheran Church Fraser will officiate. A luncheon will follow the service with a location to be announced.
In honor of Paul’s love for animals, especially dogs, memorial contributions may be made to the Michigan Humane Society.
