When Stephaine was born on July 8th 2001 it was one of the greatest moments of my life.
Back then it began a journey that started with raising a daughter, who grew up to become my best friend. If it would have stopped there. It would have been more than anybody could ever ask for. But it didn't. Her diagnosis taught me that not only was she my daughter, my best friend and one of the greatest people I have ever met. She was also my hero.
Stephaine took on cancer like everything else in her life. She faced it with a smile on her face and a heart overflowing with love. While she went to battle. She still worried more about everybody around her. Then worrying about herself. My goal was to make sure she went into this fight with a solid team in her corner and also to keep everyday filled with love and laughter. She made my goals very easy to accomplish. While cancer could change her appearance. While the treatments could take away her hair. She never let cancer change who she was.

She kept doing everything she enjoyed doing. Cancer couldn't take away her smile, it couldn't take away her love and it never slowed down her laughter. It would have been easy to scream out why me !
It would have been easy for her to show anger and frustration. But she refused to let cancer win when it came to that.  I had the pleasure of being the person she chose to spend the most time with. With that, it allowed me to know more about her than anybody else.
Stephaine wasn't ready to let go of her childhood. She enjoyed playing video games, watching funny shows and listening to her favorite music. While kids her age thought they were to old to being doing that stuff. She decided to be her own person and hold on to the things that made her happy. She never followed the script that others her age did. She just simply wrote her own.
Even with hanging on to her childhood. She could still be more mature when the situation called for it. If some kid gave her a hard time. She would just ignore them and hope eventually they would change. She embraced school, got her work done and made the honor roll numerous times. The minute a task at hand was complete. She flipped the switch back to being a child. It was full tilt fun, with a side of giggles until it was bedtime.

Stephaine spent a lot of time worrying about all of us during her battle. The morning of her biopsy she was busy asking myself and others if we were OK. Early on in her battle her brother broke down and started crying worrying about her. Before Val or I could respond. Stephaine called him into her room, gave him a hug and comforted him.

In 2011 I was diagnosed with diabetes. My blood test were so bad the doctor said it was a miracle that I didn't die or have a massive stroke. When I told Stephaine what was going down she started to cry and gave me a hug. From that moment on she would always check on me and stood right by my side. We ate every night together in my basement. Then spent the rest of the night hanging out and watching TV together. When this battle with cancer started. I had her moved into our bedroom. Placed a recliner next to the bed. Then proceeded to continue to do what we had been doing. It was just on another floor of our house.
Keeping the theme going of not letting cancer stop her from doing what she wanted to do.
When things started to appear to get better and she could walk around without much help. She insisted on returning back downstairs for a PPV party. She didn't want everybody else to be cramped up in her room. So if she needed to take 20 minutes to get down the steps or if she needed to slide down them. She was going to do it. Just to make sure everybody else had a good time.
When this battle with cancer began I felt the need to help inspire and motivate her. I reached out to people she watched on TV. The first two people that replied were Gabriel Iglesias and the star of Travel Channels Hotel Impossible Anthony Melchiorri. Gabriel sent her a personalized autograph and Anthony did as well. Anthony also took the time to write her a letter. That letter ended up inspiring Stephaine and I to create our site to help others with childhood cancer. Amissionoflove.com

Even while in the biggest fight of her life. She again wanted to help others. On the site you will find pages dedicated to both of these men and what their gestures meant to Stephaine and our family. But I want to take a moment to share with everybody here part of an email I received from Anthony after he heard about Stephaine passing away.

I'm so sorry for your loss.  To know I was of some comfort to your family in this time of need is overwhelming. Stephanie was a precious and courageous child.  I have three daughters and hope my daughters grow up to be as tough as Stephanie.

Anthony took the time to write this while filming his new season of Hotel Impossible. He even offered to help in any other way I could think of and provided all of his contact information in the email.
I wanted to share that for a reason. Stephaine was such a special person that she could take a place in a part of your heart. Without you really ever getting to know her. During her 27 days in Hospice I watched numerous medical professionals shed tears in her room. They all heard of how special she was and seeing her in that state touched them and broke their hearts. These medical professionals ranged from students to nurses with 40 or more years on the job.

In her last 27 days in the hospital I had told her story 1000 times. So please forgive me for telling it 1001. Stephaine never said a bad word. She never got angry, frustrated or a little bit upset. She made sure to let everybody know in our house before bed that she loved them. Then quite a few times during the day she would let you know how much she loved you. She didn't see bad in a bad person. She kept trying to dig through the layers in search of the good. She went to 42 radiation treatments with a smile on her face. Then returned home wearing that same smile. Try as hard as this world could. It just could not find anything to bring her down. I stand up here and you see a man that lost his daughter, his best friend and his hero. But this room is full of people that lost out on a lot more. You never got to be as close to her as I did. You didn't get to see all of her great qualities. As far as a human being goes. She didn't just play the game. She was a game changer.

If you visit our site you see the saying teamwork makes the dreamwork. That team was built with family, friends, medical professionals and two celebrities. That brings me to Gabriel Iglesias. While his autograph meant the world to her. It was his comedy that kept her spirits up through multiple surgeries, days spent in a hospital and even during radiation treatments. She would giggle during these treatments while listening to him on CD. I knew that what she told Make a Wish wasn't her first choice. She wanted to meet Gabriel in person. When she found out that it takes 6 to 12 months to grant a wish. Well she picked something else as Gabriel was coming to town March 7th. I told her we would get her tickets to see him perform and just maybe she could meet him. I once again reached out to Gabriel and his team. My wife and I were able to make that meeting take place on March 7th. Instead of just a meet and greet. We were put on the personal guest list of Gabriel. Instead of a minute or two with him. We got 15 minutes. Instead of a picture. We got a bunch of pictures and the two of them took a couple of selfies. I was able to tell Gabriel face to face how much everything he did meant to her. Stephaine was able to present him with one of the shirts we will be giving away to other kids fighting cancer. Gabriel went out of his way to take multiple pictures with the shirt. He knew what those pictures will mean to other kids fighting the same battle that Stephaine did. I will never forget the look of emotion in his eyes when he heard just how much of an impact his work had on her.

When Stephaine and I started this site. I knew a day like this could come. Unlike other sites like ours I will not just end it with in memory of. I will continue on with the goals her and I setout together to work on. Those goals were to tell her story, help all others fighting childhood cancer while at the same time raising awareness for it. 43 kids everyday are diagnosed with cancer. Raising awareness may help with early detection and in turn can save a life. This site is A mission of love. It's my mission to keep it going to honor who she was, everything she meant to me and this battle was all for nothing. You see this battle wasn't all for nothing. She taught me a lot along the way. There is also something else I wanted to add to our list of goals. This idea came too me during her final 27 days. Even in the state she was in. She was still part of the team. All I needed to do was look at her face and take in what was missing from it.

On Sunday March 15th stephaine fell early that morning. As the day progressed you could look at her and tell something wasn't right. She was just laying in bed listening to one of the music channels on Direct TV. I popped in to check on her and sat in the chair next to the bed. Stephaine and I had a bond where we could answer a question before the other one asked it. We were always on the same page. Same as she could look at me without saying a word and I knew what it meant to do next. When the song by American Authors Best Day of my life started playing. She gave me that look. I knew it meant to ask her the question. That question was, what is the best day of your life. She said getting to meet Gabriel with her big smile. She then asked what was the best day of my life. I said getting to meet you. Her smile got bigger and her eyes were filled with love.  I told her I loved her and left her alone to get some rest. That was the last conversation we ever had.

On the morning she passed away. I mentioned that it was on March 15th when I lost our daughter. Everything that made her special was gone. There was no more conversation, no more laughter and for the first time since I laid eyes on her the smile was gone.

Speaking of her smile and staring at it being gone for 27 days inspired something else for the site her and I created. I wanted a part of the site to be a true honor to her and in this section her memory and her mission would live on forever. When I relax and close my eyes. I see a vivid reminder playing over and over in my head of our last conversation. I remember the love in her eyes and that big smile on her face. That is the memory I want to live on forever. I feel there is only one way to truly honor that. It's my goal to register A Mission Of Love as a legal non profit organization. Once that is done. I will work with others to create fundraisers that will see 100% of the proceeds go to not only our t-shirt and hat give aways. But also to what I'm going to do in her honor. In year #1 this will be totally financed out of pocket and hopefully by year two it will be able to be done more often and a much bigger scale.

In May I will deliver the first monthly Stephaine K Marshall Best Day Award. I will pick one warrior a month fighting childhood cancer and do something to give them a best day. Whether it be assisting the family with making a dream come true. Giving the child a night out to a pro wrestling event, the movies, a concert, dave and busters, a sporting event or a shopping trip to Best Buy. Whatever it takes to make that childs day a little better.
That is how I trully feel I can keep her memory alive. By doing what she did for me everyday on this planet. Making each day a little better.

I will also honor her by talking with other kids fighting childhood cancer and their loved ones. The scoreboard might say she didn't win vs cancer. But I disagree. Stephaine taught me that cancer can change your appearance but it cant change who you are. It cant stop you from embracing life and doing everything you enjoy doing. She taught me that it's not the amount of life you live. It's about the amount of living in the life your given. There are people in this world over 70 years old that would need another 70 to match her 13 years when it comes to love and laughter. No she didn't lose. She won. She gave us a blueprint to help others in their battle with cancer. While I cant see her everyday anymore. Her memory and her love will live on in our hearts forever. As the saying goes. A daughter may outgrow your lap. But she will never outgrow your heart.

My wife Valerie and our son John rose up and supported Stephaine in her battle. John took a back seat and never complained that all the focus and attention was on his big sister. Instead he stepped up and would do anything she asked for help with. John made sure his big sister knew he loved her. John also knows that his sissy loved him very much.

Valerie took on the role of quarterback of our team. She scheduled and made sure Stephaine got to all of her numerous doctor appointments. It was Valerie who ignored the urgent care diagnosis and instead took her to the ER. There it was discovered that she had a tumor. Who knows how much quicker and painful things could have ended if it wasn't for that decision. Valerie made sure that Stephaine got to all her treatments and stood by her side for all 42 radiation treatments. In one of the most emotionally draining moments of her life. She was able to put her feelings aside, rise up and work on our daughter making a comeback. I want you and John to know how much I love you and how proud I am of both of you.

Nanna and Pappa. If there was a hall of fame for grand parents. You guys would be first ballot selections. Stephaine looked forward to seeing you guys anytime she got the chance. You filled a lot of her days with even more love and laughter. Not only did you make her days better. But in the worse moment of our lives. You did the same for Val, John and I. I cant ever thank you enough, even begin to express how much I love you guys and how thankful I am for marrying my way into your wonderful family.

It would take forever to mention the rest of the family. So I want to let each and everyone of you here know that you meant the world to Stephaine. She loved all of you very much. She would get excited knowing she was going to be seeing you. Aunt Denise you get a special mention here. I think you probably know this already. But she looked at you more like a big sister or a best friend. There was a reason she would tag along on our little field trips and hangout with us in the basement. I know this journey and today a lot of tears will be shed. But close your eyes in those times and remember when we shed tears from laughing so hard when the three of us were together.

I would like to thank her Aunt Jackie and our neighbor Billy. It was their efforts on Sunday March 15th that allowed us to get Stephaine to her care team. Without that effort a lot of our family may have never gotten the chance to say their goodbyes. With what we know now. Had she went down the street from our house by ambulance she probably leaves this world really fast and in a lot of pain. It was your help and the work of her care team at Royal Oak Beaumont that gave her a better ending.

The care team at Royal Oak Beaumont. I could never thank you enough. Not only did you all rise up and make things better for our family. You showed us that your all human, you have hearts and you cared as much about our little girl as we did. I will never forget all the tears you shed along with us in her room those final 27 days. I can never forget such moments as Denise a staff member insisting she take our laundry home and do it so we wouldn't have to leave the hospital. Ellen you provided us with a double room and a private sitting area when you didn't have to. You made things as close to a home as you could with that gesture. Then there is all the nurses. Each and everyone of you touched our hearts. Trudy, Maureen and Vanessa became like family members to us. I hope in the future any family that has to be in our spot can get all 3 of you together and on their side. You 3 stepped up and made this journey a little easier for our family. The child life team there was also a big help and made things a little easier for us. The doctors all will be forever in our hearts for doing everything they could to fight for a comeback. Because of those efforts. It's the reason why the site Stephaine and I created will promote and work side by side with Royal Oak Beaumont for many years to come. I think it's that hospital that will put our best day award to an end. They have the team committed to giving a child the best day of their life by giving them a cure.

All of my friends. You took Stephaine and made her your friend to. All of you stepped up, supported us and stood by our sides in the most difficult moments of our lives. We can never thank you enough. Just know that we appreciate and love each and everyone of you.
The hospice team. Linda, Kim and your entire staff worked and went the extra mile for us. I appreciate you and everything you have done for us. I hope I never have to talk with a family that ends up down the road we traveled. But if I do. I want your team riding along with me.

Sarah and your entire family here at the funeral home gave us everything we needed to make today happen. I want everybody here to know that Sarah and her family have dealt with the same thing were going through. It's because of knowing how a family like ours feels at this moment that Sarah and her family have donated their services to make this day possible. The cost for this service was much lower than any of us could have ever dreamed of. Her family gave us the biggest gift at the most emotional time of our lives.

And finally Stephaine.
I could spend hours talking about how much you made my life better. It would have been an honor just to know you. But to say that your my daughter is the greatest feeling in the world. In 2011 you saved my life. You were the inspiration and motivation behind my weight loss. You were my tag team partner in taking on and winning vs diabetes. Not only are you my daughter. Your my best friend and my hero. The way you approached life is something I will always remember and admire. You showed me what love really is and you taught me so many lessons. I know you would want me and everybody here to move on and stop crying. But that will be easier said than done. I know a lot of people in this spot may have regrets and wish they would have said more. But not me. I told you multiple times a day how much I loved you. Multiple times how proud you made me feel. In return you told me a million times how much you loved all of us. When you hugged me during the song I Am Your Child at the Barry Manilow concert. That was the best feeling in the world. You are my child and always will be. I will spend the rest of my life missing you and remembering how much you made my life better. I love you. I will see you again. I will make sure your legacy lives on. Your time on earth has ended my angel. But what you and I created. Our mission of love has just begun.
